Pasadena is making changes to the Playhouse District parking, which includes expanding the meter zone boundaries, implementing a new meter rate structure, and establishing a Playhouse Parking Meter Zone Parking Advisory Commission. This initiative aims to provide better parking management and alleviate traffic congestion in the area. The City Council has approved the expansion and rate changes, with the support of property owners and the business community in the district.
The new boundaries will extend to the east, creating more metered street parking options for shoppers and moviegoers. The updated meter rate will involve a base rate plus additional charges for each extra hour, and it will be adjusted based on parking demand to maintain 70 to 90 occupancy during paid hours. The paid parking hours will also be extended from Monday to Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Additionally, a Playhouse Parking Meter Zone Parking Advisory Commission will be established, comprising seven members who will help decide how to allocate revenues collected from parking meters and oversee the meter program.
Overall, these changes are expected to create unique opportunities for expanded public and employee parking, manage valuable curb space, increase revenue for Playhouse Village initiatives, and utilize off-street private parking facilities more effectively. The new rates are set to begin on July 1, 2025, and will be adjusted annually thereafter based on changes in the consumer price index.
