Apple is reportedly making significant strides towards the development of a new tabletop device reminiscent of an iPad, designed to manage smart home products, enhance household security, and facilitate video calls. Anticipated to launch as early as 2026, the device will feature a thin robotic arm capable of adjusting a large touchscreen display, enabling it to tilt and rotate for optimal user interaction.
The initiative, initiated in 2022, has gained momentum following the discontinuation of Apple’s multi-billion dollar car project. Kevin Lynch, Apple’s vice president of technology and former head of the car project, currently leads the development of this innovative device. A team of hundreds is reportedly dedicated to its creation, as Apple aims to leverage its existing technologies, including its popular Siri voice assistant, for seamless user control.
While the concept has sparked excitement internally, there are concerns regarding market demand for the product, especially given Apple’s strong presence in the tablet sector. Pricing could also be a determining factor, with estimates suggesting a cost around $1,000.
This tabletop device is part of a broader strategy by Apple to diversify its portfolio amid stagnating iPhone sales—a product that still constitutes approximately half of the company’s revenue. Additionally, Apple is rumored to be exploring other projects, including smart glasses, AirPods with integrated cameras, and even foldable iPhones and iPads, as it seeks to enhance its market offerings and strengthen its financial performance moving forward.
